James Gunn's The Suicide Squad is on everybody's lips at the moment. How could it not be? A brand new DCEU film is e'er cause for plenty of internet churr, if not outright celebration, and in the case of The Suicide Team , it comes from one of the only directors who has managed to put an auteur'due south stamp on a blockbuster-sized superhero movie. It's been warmly received by critics, currently boasting (as of this writing) a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.

And since Gunn's new moving-picture show, while technically IS a sequel to 2016'due south Suicide Squad movie, it plays it as loose equally possible with that, in part because of the critical savaging the first David Ayer movie received. Simply for years, at that place have been whispers (well, more than whispers) that the theatrical cut of Suicide Squad wasn't the picture show Ayer intended to make, and that the picture show was re-cut in a panic afterwards brutal reviews of Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice vi months earlier. And to be off-white, it wasn't entirely undeserved: the finished production was bizarrely edited, with picayune character development, and painfully on-the-nose needle drops at virtually every opportunity, all in an endeavor to lighten the perceived darkness brought on by Batman v Superman and perchance inject a little Guardians of the Galaxy "misfits set to cool tunes" vibes into the proceedings.

It didn't piece of work.

Shortly after, Zack Snyder stepped away from directing Justice League and that picture was given a similarly bizarre makeover in his absence. But word soon spread that Snyder'due south original vision was far more complete than anyone suspected (and further abroad from the finished production than we imagined), and the internet began to clamor for the release of "the Snyder Cutting," which HBO Max finally obliged them with before this year. And once it became apparent that this kind of matter could be done, and with Ayer occasionally offering teases of what his original plan for Suicide Squad included, "the Ayer Cut" similarly became a discipline of cyberspace discourse.

With The Suicide Squad gear up to arrive next week, some critics accept chosen to compare information technology to the 2016 movie, which led Ayer to release a heartfelt statement on Twitter both about his life, and his struggles with Suicide Squad . Just in item, and once and for all, he confirms that he completed that movie every bit he intended…that simply isn't the movie that we got to come across.

"I put my life into Suicide Team," Ayer wrote. "I made something amazing – My cutting is [an] intricate and emotional journey with some 'bad people' who are shit on and discarded (a theme that resonates in my soul). The studio cut is non my movie."

Ayer even takes a shot at the theatrical cuts bizarrely chosen soundtrack.

"And my cutting is not the ten week managing director'south cutting – Information technology'south a fully mature edit by Lee Smith standing on the incredible work by John Gilroy. Information technology's all Steven Price'southward brilliant score, with not a single radio vocal in the whole affair."

Equally for the story?

"Information technology has traditional character arcs, astonishing performances, a solid 3rd act resolution. A handful of people have seen it. If someone says they take seen it, they haven't."

Still (and as anyone who follows both directors on Twitter has already seen), Ayer has zip but support and kind words for James Gunn and his vision for The Suicide Squad . But as for The Ayer Cut? He cautions, "I will no longer speak publicly on this affair."

Y'know what? Warner Bros. should release The Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad . The studio has long made the fact that the DCEU movies are directors' showcases with more creative freedom a real point of difference between their efforts and the Marvel Studios house style. While something like The Snyder Cut may not have been this writer'southward cup of tea, it's a shame to see these directors accept their work rendered near unrecognizable. They deserve their solar day in the sun, even if it'due south destined to remain a curiosity.
